Bluegrass News
- High in fibre
Bluegrass Turmash contains 20% fibre, ideal for supporting gut health and reducing cereal content of a diet. Fibre in the diet helps to “buffer” the stomach and prevent the incidence of gastric ulcers. It also supports the sensitive microbial population essential for the digestion of fibre sources in the hindgut.
- Low in starch
High starch diets are often found in performance diets and are important for supplying key energy to meet the requirements of those demanding workloads. However, if large starch feeds are consumed at one time and undigested starch enters the hindgut, it can lead to issues such as hindgut acidosis, laminitis or tying up.
Bluegrass Turmash contains only 4.3% starch. Ideal for those horses that have gastric sensitivity or previous history of conditions such as laminitis, tying up, colic or gastric ulcers. This also means the energy sources within Turmash are slow release and excess excitable energy can be avoided.
- Contains Flaxseed Oil
The addition of flaxseed oil helps to increase the calorie content of the diet, promoting weight gain and condition. Flaxseed oil is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, proven to support joint health, immune function and promote coat shine.
- Cereal free
Bluegrass Turmash is cereal free, energy is supplied through super fibres and oils. Turmash is designed to be fed as a supplementary feed alongside a balancer, cube or mix and so therefore does not increase the cereal content of the diet.
- Contains turmeric
Turmeric has been a popular additive for human and animal feed, with growing popularity in equine supplements targeting joint and gastric health. There has been a lot of research on human health associated benefits and recently some equine related studies.
Curcumin (the compound in turmeric related to health benefits), has been shown to have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A study by Fletcher & Gough, 2019 found that supplementing turmeric reduced the severity of squamous ulceration in horses.
The Flaxseed oil within Bluegrass Turmash allows the curcumin to dissolve within the oil before ingestion to bypass the metabolic enzymes, allowing the curcumin to be directly absorbed into the lymphatic system.
- Suitability
Bluegrass Turmash can be fed to a wide range of horses and ponies, it is suitable for:
- Senior horses
- Performance horses
- Showing horses
- Box rest
- Sales prep
- Quick soaking time
Unlike some soaking feeds, Bluegrass Turmash has a quick soaking time of between 15-20 minutes, (even quicker with warm water), taking the hassle out of soaking and waiting at feeding time.
- Super fibres
Energy sources in Bluegrass Turmash are supplied through oils and “super fibres”, such as soya bean hulls and sugar beet. These are highly digestible sources of fibre that contain nearly as much energy as cereals and are “safer” to use due to their fibrous nature reducing the likelihood of a cereal overload.
- Highly palatable
It has been clear from our customer feedback that horses love their Bluegrass Turmash. It can be used to hide supplements such as electrolytes and encourage fussy eaters.
- Additional water
Soaking Bluegrass Turmash with additional water can help to increase water intake. This is particularly handy when away at competitions for those horses that struggle to drink away from home or for horses on box rest.
