Bluegrass News
We have finally got up and running with the Polo season in Ireland!
We started off the month with some team chukkas on grass and were able to get the ponies and players into the swing of things again. Our first tournament of the year was in the AIPC in Phoenix Park Dublin on 9th and 10th June for the Stuarts Cup. This was also in collaboration, on the Saturday, with The June Ball for IMNDA, who successfully raised €15,000 from the charity event. We were also able to welcome Ashley from Bluegrass Horse Feeds to come along and meet the ponies and watch them play.
Unfortunately for LHK Polo, we lost out on Saturday to Pegus Polo team. This meant we went through to the subsidiary final on Sunday against Wicklow Polo team. By Sunday the team had clicked together and worked out a strategy of team play that allowed them to beat Wicklow by 5 goals to 3. The ponies all played very well especially with the relentless heat all weekend and had a lovely day off on the Monday to recuperate. We were especially proud of our baby Lizzie who played her first tournament and didn’t put a foot wrong.
The ponies continued to stick and ball the following week to get in some more practice and eventually our new lorry arrived so we are back on the road again.
The weekend of the 16th and 17th June Polo Wicklow hosted the Stolen Spurs tournament. This was an America style tournament with three teams playing against each other with each team playing a total of 8 chukkas over the weekend. LHK Polo won both games on Saturday against Tyrone Polo and Pegus Polo respectively and the scores carried through until Sunday. LHK Polo won against both teams on Sunday again to hold a final cumulative score of 19 goals to 11 goals Pegus Polo and 16 goals Tyrone Polo to win the tournament.
We have a few weekends now of chukkas before the next tournament on 7th and 8th July in AIPC Dublin. This will give the ponies some time to rest up as the ground has been very hard and the weather very warm, and for the team to practice. Hopefully we can continue the success and gain some more wins next month.
