Bluegrass News
In this behind the success Q&A we took to a different discipline from the norm and found out what’s involved behind a successful polo team. The Bluegrass Horse Feed team caught up with Colm Kelleher from the sponsored polo team LHK Insurance.
What’s your favourite horse you’ve ridden?
A gelding originally from Chile called Keano.
What horse would you like to have in your stables?
Chocolate, a US bred thoroughbred played by Adolfo Cambiaso.
Are there any other disciplines you enjoy?
I used to event and hunt before I got into Polo.
Favourite horseshow?
RDS Dublin Horse Show. LHK sponsor the International 7 & 8 year olds class.
Do you prefer the Greatest Showman or Les Mis soundtrack?
Neither – I'm a Bruce Springsteen fan!
What’s the one thing in your tack room you can’t be without?
HUSK La Irenta boots – perfect for keeping the ponies legs cool and protected.
Have you any routines or habits before you go to a match?
It’s good to arrive early and sort out what sticks I will use and do some stretches before warming up the ponies.
Do you have any other hobbies or sport interests?
There is only one sport that matters – Polo!
Name one competition that you really want to win?
The Pakistan Cup held at the All Ireland Polo Club in Phoenix Park Dublin every September.
What’s your favourite Bluegrass Horse Feed Product?
Definitely Stamm 30 although a big fan of Turmash as well.
When did you start riding?
My parents both hunted so they got me into horses at a young age.
First pony’s name?
Shortie – a cob from Wexford.
What’s your proudest achievement so far?
Marrying my wife and having our first child Sophia.
What’s your favourite training exercise?
I like to ride the horses as much as I can in the week before a game. In polo we practice by stick and balling and can take time to work on certain swings and shots like penalties.
One piece of advice you’d give to young riders?
I’d say to follow your equestrian goals and to try new things – like polo or polo x if your pony club offers – but also to stay in school and complete your education as you never know what doors will open to you.
